Trials of a New Life

Jenny grinned. "A wild ride huh, you mean jumping over a bridge and driving through an icy warehouse wasn't wild enough? I know we will be." She put on her helmet and tossed Sally's to her. "You know I think we got to make this helmet your and not my spare." She said crystal clear via the helmets communication device. "Maybe make it pink? Also when is Hettie old enough for me to take on a ride?"

"I meant one that doesn't end with frostbite!" laughed Sally as she put the helmet on. "And how about I get a new pink helmet and we keep this as a spare for both of us!" She went silent for a moment. "Hettie... on the bike?" She sounded worried.

"Okay we get you a new helmet we just have to make sure the communication thing works with it." Jenny started the bike and pressed the button the would open the garage door. "Yeah Hettie on the bike with me, her mom." It felt odd to ask for persion to take their daughter to do something. "I would drive differntly with her on the bike, not like I do with you."

"We could have that be a little project for Hettie," suggested Sally as she slipped her arms around Jenny and held on. "And.. she would like it. Okay, as long as you drive safely!"

"Yeah I guess she needs loads of those for her." Jenny laughed. "Hey when do I not drive safely?"

Jenny changed gears and sped through the dark city, it was late and most people where by now home.

"And there are child seats available to attached on the bike."

"We'll need to keep her busy," nodded Sally, though Jenny wouldn;t see the nod. "And how about right now!" she teased.

"Seriously? Kids seats for bikes?" Sally was stunned.

"Perfectly safe. Fast but safe. Yes I saw that once in a catalogue. I bet she loves it." Jenny giggled as she was speeding around corners and past any car they met on the street.

"Fast... isn't that safe.." said Sally, but she was caring less as she got lost in the thrill of the speed they were going at. "I don;t doubt she will!"

Jenny giggled as she drove around the last corner and stopped on the hotel car park and then stopped rather dramatically. "I will be back in the morning for breakfast. I gonna miss you I hope you know that. Should go up first?"

"You're not staying?" asked Sally a little shocked.

"Oh." Jenny stuttered. "I mean, I... I." Jenny parked the bike and took off her helmet. "Yes of course I stay. Sorry. I just, I... I want to talk with Dad for a minute. I feel like I have to make sure that my memory was false. It's silly I know, but I have to. I won't need long and then I am all yours."

"I... think I understand," said Sally as she got off the bike and headed to the lift. "And it's... it's not just for me I want you here. I don't want Hettie to try and cook her breakfast again," she explained a little bashfully.

The lift pinged as it stopped on the floor of Sally's room. Jenny grinned a little and followed Sally. "I have to try and teach her to create heat without flame."

Jenny knocked at the room and waited for Mark to open it. A little sting of worry still there.

"I think we should teach her not to use her flame on everything first before giving her more options," said Sally, holding back a little as Jenny knocked. It didn't take long for the door to open.

"There you are girls!" smiled Mark. "Did you have a nice date?"

Jenny flinched when Mark opened the door though his words reminded her that he was her caring Dad. "Hey yes. Everything okay here? Dad do you mind if I stay here tonight? Also, did you ever punish me because I went in your bedroom, you know before I died?" Jenny hugged Mark and instantly felt save and stupid for believing that false memory. "Sorry stupid memories messing with my head."

Mark smiled and hugged his daughter back. "Of course you can stay here if you want. You know where to find me. And yes, everything's been quiet since the phonecall." He looks at Jenny for a moment. "Well, there was that time you snuck in and accidently set the bedcovers alight... but that was more a lecture about asking permission that punishment."

Sally meanwhile had quietly opened the door to Hettie's room and looked inside. Hettie was sleeping deeply, her head resting on one of the technical manuals, it's pages very slightly singed.

"Yeah my version more a... beating. I remember I wasn't able to leave the bed for a week." Jenny mumbled looking shy away.
"Sorry the house is a bit of a mess. I'm still figuring out all the logistics with Sally and you and I guess I got to tell Dirk in person." Jenny hugged Mark again. "I did mention that you are a great dad right?"

"That certainly didn't happen," said Mark, sounding horrified at the thought. "And don't worry about the house, you know it wasn't exactly clean anyway!" he added with a smile. "Want me to call Dirk tomorrow and have you meet up?" He smiled more with the complement. "Thanks kiddo!" He ruffled Jenny's hair like she was a little girl.

"Yeah figured." Jenny mumbled.

"No I call him myself, I don't need my dad to make me playdates." She laughed. "I'm just not sure what he will say." Jenny hugged Mark again. "I call tomorrow. We have quite a few questions how to handle Hettie."

"It's okay Jenny. Maybe one day you'll get your true memories back," said Mark trying to sound comforting. He laughed at the playdate comment. "It's Dirk. He won't take it badly. I don't think it'd possible for him to react badly at all. And maybe he could give a few tips... though... he kids aren't quite the handful Hettie is."

"Speaking of Hettie I think I better go in. I call you tomorrow. I still need to get the file of Sally's dad and hear your version of the story. But I promised Sally not to push the two of you together." Jenny kissed Mark on the cheek and went into the room. "Sally?" She whispered.

"Sure thing Jenny," said Mark turning to leave. He paused. "Oh, and Jenny, you two do make a cute couple!" he smiled.

Sally made a 'shh' motion as Jenny came in, then smiled. "Our little genius like to read in bed, using her powers as a touch," she whispered.

This evening night had a few disastrous moments but all in all it was kind of perfect. Jenny hugged Sally from behind. "Not sure I have done that when I was little, Dad said we are a cute couple and that Hettie is a handful. I guess I was easier being a little less smart or you know a lot less smart." She whispered quietly closing their daughter's door. Jenny took a deep breath holding Sally close.

"You smell of gasoline, leather and speed. I like that."

"Don;t worry, we'll manage," smiled Sally. She flicker her hair a little as Jenny held her. "What else do you like about me?" she purred.

"Like? Nothing." Jenny was nibbling at Sally's neck. "But I love you! Everything about you, like we had sex an hour ago and you are asking for more. That most people were scared of their daughter's powers but not you. That I don't need to pretend to be anything I'm not."
